About Designer Jan Tomas

Jan Tomas was born in Prague. He studied at the Academy of Arts Architecture and Design at the Department of Graphic Design and Poster Design studying under Professor Zděnek Ziegler. In 1998, he won second prize in Osaka, Japan, for his design for the League of Historical Cities logo. In the same year he also received first prize for his posters for the new Mercedes Benz Class S advertising campaign. After graduating in 1999 he went to Berlin, where he studied visual communications at the University of the Arts under Professor Holger Matthies. His first collection of typefaces was inspired by the latest technology and designed for 2D animation. In 1999, these typefaces were registered in the Linotype Library. He participated in group exhibitions at the DDD Gallery in Osaka in Japan 2000, and in the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg in 2001. After graduation he continued cooperating with Professor Holger Matthies in Hamburg. In 2001, he founded his own STUDIO in Prague and his clientele consists of companies from around the world. In 2001, his poster Against Right-wing Violence won first prize in a poster competition organised by AGI. Jan Tomas took part in the International Biennale of Graphic Design in Brno in 2002 and 2004. In 2004, he received the Certificate of Typographic Excellence from the Type Directors Club in New York. From 2005 to 2007 he worked on creating new typefaces inspired by futuristic technologies. In 2011, he set up Future Typo. In 2014 he received the Certificate of Typographic Excellence from the Type Directors Club in New York for his printed publication “TYPEFACE DESIGN”. The same year, he participated in group exhibitions at the International Biennale of Graphic Design and a poster in Mexico and at the International Biennale of Graphic Design, Moscow. In 2015 he received the Certificate of Typographic Excellence from the Type Directors Club in New York for his short animated film “FUTURE TYPO”. In 2015, Jan Tomas gave a lecture at the University of Texas where he first presented his fonts designed for animated typography. Since 2017, Jan Tomas has been lecturing at universities in China.
